Coding is an essential piece of the infrastructure of our lives; it’s in our hospitals, our phones, our cars – it’s everywhere. As such, coding can go beyond the STEM classroom and be infused in all classrooms to deepen learning. So why isn’t coding already part of every classroom? Many teachers are reticent to integrate it because they don’t feel confident in their knowledge of the skill, or may not even be sure exactly what coding is. In this institute, you will learn the foundations of coding and computational thinking, then explore the benefits of infusing all subject areas, including social-emotional learning, with coding to deepen learning. This institute is for any K-8 teacher or media specialist, from STEM coaches who have spent years coding in the classroom, to the everyday teacher who has never coded a day in their life.

Workshop Descriptions
Workshop Title | Description | Learning Outcomes |
---|---|---|
Workshop 1: Computational Thinking in the Classroom | What is computational thinking? Why is it an important set of skills for any learner? At the onset of this hands-on workshop, you will explore computational thinking as a necessary skill set for all learners. Next, you will code Photon, the coding robot, in an activity that fosters computational thinking skills. This workshop ends in an optional 30 minute office hour session to field any learner questions. | - Create a computational thinking resource. - Engage in a coding activity with Photon, the coding robot. - Reflect on computational thinking as a cognitive result of the coding activity. |
Workshop 2: Coding Across the Curriculum | Coding fosters 21st century skills that are relevant to all subject areas. In this workshop, explore the ways in which we can infuse our subject-specific skills and content with coding to create rich, deep learning experiences. | - Explore the synthesis of content knowledge with coding to engage students in active, deep learning. - Experience choice boards that promote learning opportunities with Photon. - Complete a Photon coding challenge in one or many subject areas. - Identify learning experiences where Photon can be integrated as an instructional tool for multiple subjects. |
Workshop 3: The Code to SEL | Social-emotional learning skills are critical for childhood development as students begin to build an understanding of self, how they relate to others and the world around them - skills that set the foundation for their social-emotional competencies as adults. In this workshop, learn how to lead targeted and strategic instruction for learners to support their development of self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making as they practice and build their coding skills. Discover how Photon, the coding robot, can be used to support the social and emotional growth of learners as they code! | - Define SEL competencies according to CASEL. - Identify strategies to support the development of SEL competencies and address individual student needs. - Code Photon to support SEL development. |
